Update: Week 9/10

Hello everyone,

Algebra 1 - Students are getting ready to take a quarter exam which covers chapters 1, 2, and 3.1-3.3. This exam is on Friday November 13th, and will be worth 150 points. We have been reviewing for the last few days. Next week we will have a second quiz on 3.1-3.3 as this weeks quiz was a little rushed and I don't feel that all the students were ready.

Physics - Students in physics are finishing up a difficult chapter right now on constant acceleration. We will be doing a reaction time lab tomorrow (Friday) in class. On Monday next week I will be having the students design a lab and then carry it out on Tuesday in class. Our next exam is next Friday November 20th.

Any questions let me know.

Update: Week 8

Physics - is having a quiz/exam today over chapter 2 and part of 3 in the book. We will be starting the rest of chapter 3 tomorrow.

Algebra 1 - has a test over all of chapter 2 on Friday! Tutoring sessions are up and running, if you notice that your son/daughter is not doing well please have them attend the Free tutoring. This is a great way for students to be able to redo a quiz or exam. So far not many students have been coming (and academically need to based on their current grades).

Update: Week 7

Hello to all,

Algebra 1 - took a quiz on tuesday and I was less than excited about the quiz grades. We are in the begining of the year and have not gotten into the more difficult chapters. We have covered adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational number which include decimals, frations, integers (both positive and negative) and have come to find that some of ours students rely only on their calculators to do simple math functions. We are going to be reviewing on friday for a retake that I am going to give on Monday during the class period. This retake will not replace their original score, if they would like to take the retake on Friday then each student would need to come to 3 tutoring sessions between today and next Friday.

Calculators - we are now in a section where calculators are imparitive to have. All that is needed is a scientific calculator, that does roots and basic functions.

Physics - did a lab today, we have nice enough weather that we were able to shoot off the rockets on the football field and make some time and distance measurements. Because of the nice weather we had to postpone the quiz that physics was supposed to take on Friday to next week.

Have a great week!

Update: Week 6

Hello,

Physics - Chapter 2 exams will be passed back on Thursday, I am still waiting on a handful of people to make-up the exam. Progress reports will be out this week, unfortunately last week’s exam, lab and review will not be on it as I have not had a chance to correct them. We are moving into Unit 3 this week which is one of the most difficult units that we cover (in my opinion). I am incorporating Ch 2, 3, & 6 into this unit; we will be having quizzes after each of these chapters.

Algebra 1- We start chapter 2 this week. I am planning on a quiz of 2.1, 2.3, and 2.6 next Monday. If there are any questions please feel free to email me or leave a comment.

Sincerely,

Mrs. S

Update: Week 5

Hello to everyone following my newsletter,

Algebra 1 - This week we are having our Chapter 1 exam, which will consist of at least 50 questions that are multiple choice, t/f, and matching. We are making our unit test like this to get our students ready for the MME/ACT math exam and our Algebra 1 Midterm and Final Exam. Tutoring is up and running and the schedule is as follows:

PM (2:45 -3:15 pm)
Tuesday - Mrs. Samouelian's Room (D-7)
Thursday - Mr. Marzec's Room (C-1)

AM (7:00 - 7:30 am)
Wednesday - Mrs. Samouelian's Room (D-7)
Friday - Mr. Dehaan / Mrs. Balogh's Room (B - 4)

Students that need extra help with reviewing should attend these tutoring sessions. I will get the CH 1 exam graded over the weekend and allow the students to retake the exam if they come to at least 2 sessions of tutoring next week (Week #6). The retake will be on Friday Oct 16th either before or after school.

Physics - We are going to be finishing up the Vector Unit this week, also with an exam on Friday. If students are at all confused about finding resultant vectors (either by using the component method or the scale method) they need to come in before or after school and get some extra help. Grades as always are a work in progress, please keep in mind that Physics is a difficult class to grade homework, especially with all the math and partial credit. I will let you know via my blog and the students when the grades are updated.

Sincerely,

Mrs. S

Update: Week 4

Hello to everyone,

I hope you all had fun at homecoming, as a chaperone it was so nice to see everyone all dressed up. This week is going to be hopefully a little less hectic than last week. Here is what is going on this week.

Algebra 1 - We will be starting with section 1.6 and hopefully making it through 1.9 by Friday. However on Wednesday both of my Algebra 1 classes will be taking an online math test in the drop-in computer lab to test their math competency. This is something new that AP is doing 3 times a year to gather data and progress of students. I will talk to the students more on Monday and Tuesday about this. Tutoring also starts this week (I believe in the media center, however this could change so keep checking back and I will post any new information). One think to keep in mind is that the entire math department is participating in the tutoring program, so I may not be teaching your son or daughter. I see this as a positive because they will get a new perspective on the topics that we are covering. I am still available for help before and after school for questions on homework, however this does not count as tutoring hours if the students want to retake their 1.1-1.5 quiz.

Physics - I will not have the chapter 1 exam graded until at least Tuesday, and I am working very hard to get grades updated. We are going to be working on Vectors this week which is not in the book, so if your son of daughter is still having trouble with the Trigonometry section we covered in chapter 1 they need to come see me so I can make sure we are all on the same page and that no one gets left behind.

Any questions, concerns or comments please leave me a message below in the comment section.

Have a great week,

Mrs. S

Update: Week 2

Week 2 is off to a good start, and students seem to be settling into their new schedules. Just a reminder that the syllabus (signed) is due tomorrow for points so make sure if it is not signed yet to do so tonight.

Algebra 1 - Is having a quiz tomorrow over the first 2 sections that we have covered, it is not a big quiz only 10 points. All other quizzes will be worth more, I just want the students to see how the quizzes are set up and give them a small practice run.

Physics - Will be having a chapter test next week sometime over the 1st chapter of the NEW physics book. We also did a measurement lab in class today and will be completing a few more small labs before we get into the main curriculum.

Hope everyone’s week is going well and if you have any general questions of comments please post them.

First Day of School!

Hello,

I sent home a syllabus with all of the students today, please read over it and fill out the information sheet. I ask that the students bring it back by next Wednesday the 16th. (Algebra 1 needs the list they made on the back of it, so either have them copy it on another sheet of paper or sign it and give it back to them)

Communication is Key!

So why a blog? Well, in the past 4 years that I have been at Allen Park I have found that communicating to students and parents over just email can be very time consuming, especially when I am answering the same questions multiple time per day. I would like to use this blog for the as a weekly update to parents and students about what we have been doing in class including: 1) class activities, 2) upcoming tests and quizzes, 3) grades and when they will be updated, and 4) a resource for students in both Physics and Algebra 1.

I will be posting weekly and will visit the blog bi-weekly to check for questions and comments. If you have a question or comment it may not be visible to others until I have reviewed it. I also ask that personal comments or questions about individual students be sent to my direct email. I also may assign the students in my classes to visit the blog and view a voice thread, pod cast, website or even a virtual field trip and expect the students to comment by a certain date and time. My expectations are that all comments are appropriate and taken seriously, as a grade may be assigned to student participation. I encourage both students and parents to check this blog weekly for information.

The title of the posting will indicate who the post is intended for. For example Physics: week one update is only intended for physics students or parents of physics students to read. Posts that do not have either Physics or Algebra 1 in the title are meant for all students and parents to read.

This is a new frontier for me as I am sure for some of you also, and I am looking forward to incorporating technology and new avenues of communication for everyone’s benefit. Remember you can always email me with questions or concerns or call me directly.
